4. Glanceable

Design for fast viewing

Modern technologies have come to an age where immediate response is at the order of the day. In the Wearable context, this becomes even more important since the user's first and perhaps only contact with the SmartWatch, for instance, involves one simple glance.
Within a range of less than five seconds, one interface should be able thus to communicate effectively a notification, alert, or any other contents without confusing or disturbing the user's view.
At this point, the user becomes a sort of viewer in a peep show, where just a small sighting of a part of the full message, both representative and informative, should be enough to let him now about the whole idea. This quality makes the interface glanceable.
Fast-viewing, unsaturated, and effective glanceable interfaces should get the attention of the user and make the most of if before the screen turns off.
The less is more rule finds itself necessary, because the regular full screen versions of apps have to transform themselves into minimalistic, one or two icon, small typography interfaces, and information demands a hierarchy.

Key Considerations

  • Less is more
  • Fast viewing
  • Clean and clear User Interface
  • Visual Hierarchy
  • Legibility
  • Typography
  • State

Principles

Less is faster and easier to absorb

Show the least amount of content that's able to transmit a singular o simple message effectively. Therefore, by reducing distractions and imprinting clarity, the time needed to understand and process the information or data is minimized.

Keep a clear user interface

Keep user interfaces uncluttered, minimalistic, aesthetic and well organized.

Respect the Hierarchy

Use color, size, type and spacing to elaborate a structure and hierarchy for which elements are in the most straightforward manner with the appropriate relevance.

Associated Heuristics, Guidelines or Principles
  • Gerhardt-Powals - Provide multiple coding of data when appropriate
  • Gerhardt-Powals - Group data in consistently meaningful ways to decrease search time

Provide visual feedback

Current state and responses should be effectively communicated to the user through obvious and clear visual cues. This might include elements such as: affordances, icons, color, size and proximity. As well as transitions, such as movement, scaling and rotation.

Associated Heuristics, Guidelines or Principles
  • Dialog Principles – ISO 9241 - Dialogue self-descriptiveness
  • Susan Weinschenk - Responsiveness
  • Gerhardt-Powals - Limit data-driven tasks
  • Nielsen - Visibility of system status

Aim for high recognition

Design should meet culturally, psychologically and context, from the target audience to create an effective glance.
To ease the recognition process, speak the user's language, talk in terms that the user will easily understand. Thus, avoiding wasting time by translating or interpreting the content.

  • Gerhardt-Powals - Present new information with meaningful aids to interpretation
  • Nielsen - Recognition rather than recall

Examples

Messages app

Notifications and detailed view are clearly displayed with easy to see big font and the best contrast.

Navigation app

When using a navigation app to travel on a car, instructions on the smartwatch are displayed with familiar iconography, clear type and displayed the right amount of time to visualize it.

Food delivery app

Notifications and detailed view of the messages include excessively big text, icons and emoticons, so big that scrolling is needed constantly, and much time is invested on understanding the message.
