Smartwatch App Design Antipattern

3. Drainy

Effective use of resources rather than real-time usage

"Real time" magical, super smart apps who promise to notify the user with incredible information about his device or his surroundings might actually turn out be a leeches undercover. Even when they come up as really cool, apps with this kind of antipattern might end up draining the battery flat, freezing screens, delivering non responsive commands and charging additional costs from the mobile provider.

Key Considerations

  • Resources
  • Battery
  • Hardware
  • Crashes
  • Abuse

Apparently Positive

Keeping the app running "real-time" or constant use of data will give the user the information on the precise moment with the right personalization.

Negative Side

The abuse of resources (battery, processing cpu, data) might fall into drain- ing the battery, non responsive screens and additional costs by the mobile provider.

Examples

Augmented reality game

When the game starts to run, it seeks to use the users' location (with GPS) in a "real-time" fashion to give the them the most accurate feedback of what's happening on their surroundings. The app stays on the background, even after dismissing the app, and continues to seek for possible conversions with the users. The constant use of Mobile Data, GPS and CPU, lead to draining resources and causing unresponsiveness. It might as also held extra charges to the user.

Heart montoring app

To get the best results possible, the app uses the heart rate monitor built in on the watch continuously. The frequent use drains the battery out of the users' device. With it, just 1/4 of the day was monitored instead of the complete day.
